Adjourn REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Call to Order Chair Allen called the meeting to order at 6:33 pm. Roll Call Commissioners in person: Ruth Paradise, Joelle Allen, Nyre Chester, Carol Luo, Ajani Woodson, Lee Thoresen, Chris Mitchell Commissioners absent: Drew Jones, Melissa Johnson, Teresa Sit Staff present: Kiarra Zackery, Equity and Inclusion Manager Rick Birno, Parks and Recreation Director Brian Erickson, Program Supervisor Approval of June 28 agenda and May 24 minutes MOTION by Commissioner Luo for the approval of the agenda and minutes. Seconded by Vice Chair Woodson. Motion carried 7-0. Public Asset Naming Policy with Open Space and Recreation Commission Parks and Recreation Director Rick Birno provided context and impetus for the partnership of OSRC and DEIC on the public asset naming policy, as directed by Council. Parks and Recreation Director Birno gave examples of current publicly named assets and the history of their naming processes. Examples included Gaerty Park, Schaper Park, Stockman Park, Klobuchar Garden and Lions Park. Parks and Recreation Director proposed possible strategies to develop the policy jointly and questions to consider during the process. Chair Joelle Allen suggested a subcommittee of both OSRC and DEIC members. Commission member Ruth Paradise suggested other considerations for the policy, including determining which types of assets can be named after someone. Equity and Inclusion Manager Kiarra Zackery suggested DEIC members coming to the next OSRC meeting to work on the policy and process. New Member Introduction and Oath of Office Equity and Inclusion Manager Kiarra Zackery swears the newly appointed Commissioners, Nyre Chester and Lee Thoresen. The Commission then provides a brief introduction to one another. May 24, 2022 – 6:30 pm Valley Room Brookview Community Center 316 Brookview Parkway City of Golden Valley Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission Meeting Minutes May 24, 2022 – 6:30 pm 2 Updates A. Allianz Event Vice Chair, Ajani Woodson provided a summary of town hall event with AllianzLife and the City of Golden Valley. B. Land Acknowledgement Chair Joelle Allen and Commissioner Ruth Paradise provided a summary of the May 10 Council work session and May 17 Council meeting where the Resolution Adopting a Land Acknowledgement passed unanimously. Commissioners showed support and excitement to begin the work of the Land Acknowledgement work plan. C. Building and Equitable Golden Valley Subcommittee Updates Commissioner Chris Mitchell provided a summary of Q2 BAEGV Environmental Justice Forum. Commissioner Chris Mitchell requested volunteers for a subcommittee to continue the partnership with the Environmental Commission to bring more events to the City. Commissioners Ruth Paradise and Lee Thoresen provide updates on the Q3 BAEGV forum on Affordable Housing. The forum will include a presentation and breakout sessions at PRISM in August. The planning subcommittee includes the Affordable Housing Coalition and Commissioners Ruth Paradise and Lee Thoresen. Adjourn MOTION by Commissioner Lee Thoresen to adjourn at 8:10 pm. In order to ensure all projects and that we complete all initiatives in a timely fashion, please choose 2-3 subcommittees for the year. We will discuss and finalize subcommittee assignments at the June meeting. Already established: Environmental Commission Collab (Chris Mitchell + _______  Jun - Dec): Developing recommended actions towards environmental justice for City Council with members of Environmental Commission Welcome Packet (Ruth Paradise + Melissa Johnson  Aug-Oct): Creating a digital information packet with resources and Golden Valley specific information, identifying a graphic designer to develop materials and disburse to community Housing Forum (Ruth Paradise + Lee Thoresen  Jun - Aug): Organizing and facilitating Aug 2022 Building an Equitable Golden Valley Forum at PRISM Future Projects: Indigenous Engagement + Action Plan (Jun-Dec): Fulfill Land Acknowledgement Action Plan items including engaging with Indigenous identifying GV families, collaborating with Robbinsdale Area and Hopkins Schools, designing Land Acknowledgement webpage with Indigenous graphic designer, commissioning art for Brookview from an Indigenous artist, drafting proclamation for Indigenous Peoples’ Day, etc. Public Asset Naming policy (June-Oct): Collaborate with Open Space and Recreation Commission to research and draft proposed policy for naming public assets (parks, buildings, benches, streets, etc.) Year-End Celebration/Closing Forum (Sep-Nov): Planning, organizing, facilitating Nov 22 Building an Equitable Golden Valley Forum on DEIC’s accomplishments Bill Hobbs Award (Nov): Create marketing strategy for Bill Hobbs Award (annual award to recognize community members committed to Human Rights celebrated on Human Rights Day), read nominations, determine honorees, create and order plaques MLK Media Contest (Dec): Create theme and prompt for 2023 student media contest, create marketing strategy, read entries, determine winners and rewards Communications (Sept-Nov): Create social media posts and news stories for remaining diversity awareness months i.e. Native American Heritage Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, etc. City of Golden Valley Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission Regular Meeting June 28, 2022 – 6:30 pm 4 Sponsorships (Jun-Dec; as needed): Develop criteria and method to review sponsorship requests; review incoming requests and determine sponsor amounts
