Call to Order 2. Land Acknowledgement: We acknowledge and honor the Dakota people as a sovereign nation, on whose ancestral land the City of Golden Valley is built, and whose land resources we use. We commit to counteracting the erasure of the cultural practices and presence of the Dakota people through education and by amplifying a wide range of indigenous voices. 3. Adjourn November 15, 2022 – 6:30 pm Council Work Session Room Golden Valley City Hall REGULAR MEETING MINUTES Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 6:34 pm Roll Call Commissioners in person: Joelle Allen, Ajani Woodson, Ruth Paradise, Chris Mitchell, Lee Thoresen, Drew Jones, Nyre Chester, and David Scheie Commissioners absent: Carol Luo Staff present: Kiarra Zackery, Equity and Inclusion Manager, Airrion Williams, Community Connections and Outreach Specialist, and Kirsten Santelices, Deputy City Manager/Human Resources Director Approval of October 25 agenda and September 27, 2022 minutes MOTION by Commissioner Paradise, seconded by Vice-Chair Woodson. Bill Hobbs Nominations Commissioners discussed the Bill Hobbs Award nominations and the rules/parameters. Chair Allen suggested that the Commission consider rules such as, not awarding the same individual multiple years consecutively. The Commission also asked to ensure that winners from previous years are highlighted on the website, and that there is future intentional advertising to ensure representation. Commissioners discussed encouraging students to participate. Commissioners Paradise and Mitchell shared that the winners will receive public recognition at City Hall in December. Furthermore, the Commission discussed revising some of the questions such as: • How has the nominee brought people together? • If and when have they received the Bill Hobbs Award? • Specifically name the equity and inclusion activities across multiple communities. October 25, 2022 – 6:30 pm Basset Creek Room Brookview Golden Valley 316 Brookview Parkway City of Golden Valley Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission Meeting Minutes October 25, 2022 – 6:30 pm 2 MOTION: Award nominees McGee and Mix the Bill Hobbs Award for 2022. Seconded by Commissioner Chester. Motion carried 8-0. Commissioner Scheie recommended updating the questions to add equity focus. Staff Updates November Meeting Commission discussed moving their regularly scheduled November meeting to November 15, 2022, in order to adequately prepare for the December 1 forum and to avoid the holiday week, which may have impacted attendance. Staff will update the communications team for the website. BAEGV Q4 Forum Planning The Commission briefly discussed the forum and agreed to the following details: o Staff Williams will support the Q4 BAEGV planning, o Commissioner Woodson will plan the food, o Commissioner Jones will prepare a kids activity, and o Commissioners Paradise, Scheie, and Allen will prepare the draft work plan for review at the next meeting. The Commission discussed having the work plan present for attendees at the forum to give feedback about the 2023 DEIC work plan. o Commissioners will get out the information to community partners and Commissioner paradise will draft language for the toolkit.
